Official Military Service was the Coast Guard.

LT Thomas J. E. Crotty was in the first class of the Navy's Mine Recovery School, graduating 22 August 1941. While attached to a Navy minesweeper in the Philippines he was captured by the Japenese and died 30 September 1942 of diphtheria in the Cabanatuan POW camp located in Nueva Ecija, Luzon, P.I.; he is buried in an unknown grave located outside of the camp.  

According to official records, LT Crotty was the only Coast Guardman to be a POW during WWII and the first since the War of 1812.
