EOD 1 Bottrell at the EOD Memorial Wall, Eglin Air Force Base - Florida

Wisconsin native Andrew Bottrell is a retired United States Navy EOD Tech wounded in action on October 1, 2011 while working with Seal Team 10 in Zabul province Afghanistan. EOD 1 Bottrell sustained injuries to three limbs entailing the loss of his right leg below the knee, left leg above the knee, and left arm through the elbow. He retired with honor in November 2013 after more than 9 years of service and currently lives in San Diego, CA.

Bottrell and his family received incredible support from the EODWF throughout his recovery, and he felt strongly about wanting to help raise awareness and money for the organization. While attending the EODWF Memorial Auction this past May he had the idea to build a custom rifle to raffle off as a way to give something back. “I realized that I knew a lot of people in the shooting industry that would like to support something like this and that I could pull them all together to build a pretty sweet rifle,” he continues, “at that point I made up my mind to do it.”

He started working on the venture shortly thereafter, and had sourced most of the components for the rifle from donors by August. Bottrell considered the project a personal challenge, and a way to push himself and his capabilities with his prosthetics. “Building a rifle with one good hand and one prosthetic hand is a bit of a challenge,” he explains, “I had to come up with new ways to put things together but I’m proud to say that I can assembled a rifle completely by myself.”
