2017 Global EOD Symposium and Exhibition
by Len Gee, Fundraising Specialist

This year’s Global EOD Symposium and Exhibition (GESE) featured over 40 organizations who presented cutting edge technology and services that serve the needs of the EOD community, as well as fantastic speakers from around the globe who presented on topics from technology and innovation to suicide prevention.
One of this year’s featured speakers was Dr. Kelly Posner Gerstenhaber, Director of The Columbia Lighthouse Project at Columbia University. Dr. Posner seeks to light the way to end suicide and to encourage individuals to ask questions that, in doing so, can save a life. Dr. Posner’s Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), the most evidence supported tool of its kind, is a simple series of questions that anyone can use anywhere in the world to take action to prevent suicide. To read and download these questions, click the links below.
Thank you to those who organized and sponsored this annual event. Without these individuals and corporations, the GESE simply could not exist and continue to provide this vital information sharing opportunity to the EOD community.
EOD Family PATHH Retreat
by Sherri Beck, Program Coordinator

In the beautiful setting of Boulder Crest – Virginia, we were honored to host three EOD families for the first EOD Family PATHH Retreat. PATHH stands for Progressive and Alternative Therapies for Healing Heroes. Posttraumatic stress can have a trickle-down effect from the warrior who has returned home and often impacts the entire family unit.
This retreat gave these families a chance to openly discuss the struggles associated with posttraumatic stress and consider the concept of choosing to live a more principled life and focusing on posttraumatic growth. Each day began with family yoga and moved into different subjects throughout the day that addressed growth as individuals, as a couple and then the entire family. These families came ready to work on the hard things but also to have fun together. It was a pleasure meeting them and being present alongside them.
We will be offering two EOD Family PATHH programs in 2018. Thank you to the Boulder Crest – Virginia staff for facilitating this amazing program and allowing EOD families to focus on principled living, finding joy and living the life they deserve.
EODWF & Soldier's Heart Retreat
By Mike Mack, EOD Family Caseworker

The EOD Warrior Foundation recently partnered with Soldier's Heart to host a Warrior Retreat at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT.  The retreat, led by Dr. Ed Tick, and his wife Kate Dahlstedt, focused on the emotional, moral, and spiritual wounds of war. Soldier's Heart has worked extensively with the military, universities, faith communities and other groups around the world.
Soldier's Heart utilizes cultural homecoming and reintegration traditions, as well as holistic spiritual methods that go beyond conventional treatment. Many of these methods were adopted from the American Indian and other historic warrior cultures that helped prepare warriors for battle and when the soldier returned home, the communities welcomed and embraced the warrior with spiritual ceremonies.
After reading Dr. Tick's book, War and the Soul, and attending this retreat with our EOD warriors, I personally experienced the positive effect these practices can have and witnessed our warriors leave with hope.

EOD Family Fun Day at Hill Air Force Base
The EOD Family Day we hosted in August was great fun!  Thank you to the Hill AFB EOD Flight for attending the event and assisting with outreach to EOD families in the area.  This was our largest EOD Family day yet, and it was such pleasure meeting everyone.  We also want to thank the 3rd Creek Master Blasters for their continued support and generosity.

Stay tuned for details on next year's EOD Family Fun Days!

The IED has profoundly changed the military formation order of battle, leveling the playing field between an asymmetric enemy and U.S. / Coalition forces both on land and sea. In the Homeland, the threat has never been greater. Attacking the malicious use of explosives on the battlefield or at home depends upon a well-coordinated, whole-of-government effort to IED defeat.
The 2017 EOD/IED & Countermine Symposium brings together a whole-of-government approach with both military and civil offices, as well as key leaders in industry with the sole objective of advancing the mission critical needs of each respective community in IED defeat.
DSI’s team specializes in the extensive research and development of our Summits' content and focus areas, and we will assemble the most respected minds in the EOD/IED & Countermine community, as well as key policy-makers across military and civilian offices. Our non-partisan approach allows us to reach across all services and organizations to bring together a truly holistic group of decision makers and solution providers.
